Hootsuite: our review
Hootsuite schedules and publishes content across several social networks from a single dashboard, with an AI writing assistant named Wisdom added to the platform's long-standing calendar and monitoring functions.
What we take away from it
What counts in its favor
- Security certifications documented in detail and verifiable: annual SOC 2 Type II audit, ISO/IEC 27001, 27701 and 27017, a rarely matched level of transparency in this market.
- A free caption generator that produces text in English, Spanish, Italian, French and German — one of the few tools in the sector to state French support in plain terms.
- Four tiers clearly separated by function (managed accounts, automation, workflows), which makes it easy to know exactly what you're paying for when moving up a tier.
What counts against it
- Billed per user per month: adding a second team member doubles the Standard tier's bill, without changing the number of managed accounts.
- Moving from 10 managed accounts to an unlimited number requires doubling the price ($99 to $199/month): an SME adding a third social network can be forced to change tiers entirely.
- The privacy policy excludes generic AI training only for data connected through Google Workspace; it says nothing equivalent for the rest of published content, which leaves the question open for most real-world use.
A solid choice for an SME or agency already managing several accounts and several team members that wants verifiable security certifications; skip it for a freelancer or a very small organization, for whom the per-user price climbs faster than actual social media use.

Hootsuite in detail
Hootsuite centralizes publishing, scheduling and analytics for several social accounts from a single dashboard. The vendor, based in Vancouver, added an AI writing assistant called Wisdom in 2023: the product's foundation remains a scheduler, text generation is a feature layered on top, not the core of the product.
What it actually does
A team connects its Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X or TikTok accounts, builds a shared editorial calendar, schedules posts and tracks their performance from a single feed. Wisdom suggests caption drafts and content ideas; higher tiers add a unified inbox for incoming messages, automated replies and approval workflows for teams that sign off on content before it's published.
Why it interests us
What sets Hootsuite apart in this category isn't its AI, but its level of security proof: SOC 2 Type II audit renewed every year, ISO/IEC 27001, 27701 and 27017 certifications, FedRAMP authorization for the US public sector. Few social media management tools publish this level of detail, which matters for an SME that itself has to reassure its clients about the security of its vendors. The free caption generator also explicitly lists French among five languages offered, a point most competitors document poorly. See our automation page for setting up these publishing flows.
Where it falls short
The first sticking point is the billing model: $99 per user per month, annual commitment. A team of three therefore pays $297/month before even exceeding the 10 social accounts included at that tier. Moving to unlimited accounts requires doubling the rate at the Professional tier, $199/month — a jump that surprises an SME that thought it was simply adding one social network.
The second point concerns the AI. Hootsuite's privacy policy explicitly excludes training generic models only for data connected via Google Workspace. For content published otherwise — captions, drafts, images — it makes no equivalent commitment, leaving the question open for most of the tool's real-world use. Finally, like any scheduler, Hootsuite depends on the Meta, LinkedIn and X APIs: its own blog acknowledges that the introduction of a paid tier on X's API, starting at $200 a month for developers, forced several third-party tools to cut back their analytics features on that platform.
Our recommendation
Hootsuite suits an SME or agency already managing several accounts with several team members and needing formal security proof. For a freelancer managing two or three networks alone, the per-user rate makes the tool expensive relative to actual use; it's then better to look at Buffer, billed per social channel rather than per seat.
Who it's for, and who it isn't
Suited for
- An SME or agency managing 5 or more social accounts with a multi-person team, that wants formal security proof to reassure its own clients
- An organization already used to a social media management tool that's hitting the account or automation limits of a simpler tool
Not a fit
- A freelancer or micro-business managing 2 to 3 networks alone: $99/month for a single user is expensive relative to actual use, against competitors billed per channel
- A company that refuses any gray area on AI training: Hootsuite only excludes it explicitly for Google Workspace data
Frequently asked questions
- How much does Hootsuite cost for a team of three?
- The Standard tier bills $99 per user per month, billed annually: three accounts therefore come to $297/month for seats alone, before even exceeding the 10 social accounts included.
- Does Hootsuite train an AI on my posts?
- The privacy policy explicitly excludes generic model training only for data connected through Google Workspace. For the rest of published content, it makes no equivalent commitment, which remains a gray area.
- Does Hootsuite's AI assistant work in French?
- Hootsuite's free caption generator explicitly lists French among five languages offered (English, Spanish, Italian, French, German), according to its own product page.
- Where is data sent to Hootsuite hosted?
- On Amazon Web Services data centers, with no exact geographic region made public; the vendor, based in Canada, does claim an annual SOC 2 Type II audit and ISO/IEC 27001, 27701 and 27017 certifications.
- What's the difference with Buffer or Later?
- Hootsuite bills per user and targets already-structured teams with workflow and compliance needs; Buffer and Later bill per social channel and cost less for a freelancer managing two or three accounts alone.
